The Australian side Chiefs won the WCA 2017 Asia-Pacific Closed Qualifier, earning $22,000 and securing a spot at the final tournament. The WCA 2017 online closed qualifier for the Asia-Pacific region kicked off on July 24th, with a nine-team round-robin BO1 group stage. After all the matches were played, the four best teams advanced to the playoffs: The MongolZ, Signature, BOOT-d[S] and Chiefs, with the Australian side placing first with a 5-1 record. The double-elimination playoffs draw matched up Chiefs with The MongolZ and Signature with BOOT-d[S]. The first game ended up being a tight one, but Chiefs managed to close out the series 2-1 despite dropping Train, a map they had a good streak on, to the Mongolian side. BOOT-d[S] dealt with Signature comfortably, securing a spot in the upper bracket game against the Australian side. In the match that secured a spot at the WCA 2017 global finals, Chiefs were the ones that picked up a 2-1 win, with Liam "malta" Schembri standing out over the course of the series. The two teams then rematched in the grand final, but this time it was a cleaner win for Tyler "tucks" Reilly and co., who closed out the series with a 16-5 on Mirage and a 16-14 on Train.
